I'm posting in this community to see if I have any other options. I chose to install a Nest thermostat in my vacation home so that I could monitor and control the temperature in the house while I was away. This worked great for a while, but after two years, the wifi on my thermostat stopped working. This caused the battery to run down as it tried to search for wifi signal, eventually running the unit into power-saving mode. This caused the unit to cycle my furnace off and on repeatedly as it tried to charge itself, which cost me over $250 in excess gas usage.
I finally was able to get back up to the house to address the problem, and after spending over an hour on the phone with customer support, I was told that the wifi chip was irreparably broken, and that because the thermostat was three months out of warranty, my only option was to "buy a new one." I asked to speak to a supervisor, and I was told that I would have to wait until the next day for a call back. When I eventually got the call back, I was curtly told that my product was out of warranty, and there was no option for a replacement, and the supervisor HUNG UP ON ME MID-SENTENCE. This seems absolutely ridiculous for a product that costs literally 10 times more than a standard thermostat.
I'd alway had positive impressions of Google and Google products in the past, but I can't imagine any other company acting this way in response to what is clearly their own hardware failure. In particular being told to just "buy a new one" like a bizarre and insulting response, because if this is how they deal with faulty hardware, why should I? Why should anyone?
If anyone has any resources or advice for escalating past the standard supervisor level to get a replacement unit, I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise, I'm just never going to purchase another google product ever again.

Hey Mountainski23,
Do you have the case ID from your conversation with support? If you can provide that here, I'll look it up and see how I can continue to help you here.
Thanks,

Hey there,
I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.
Thanks for the input, Rachel and Jake.
@Gary13 I appreciate all the steps you've taken. To isolate: could you please tell us the Nest Thermostat model you have? Are you getting any message codes in the network settings? Also, is your thermostat able to see your Wi-Fi network but won't connect or is it unable to find any networks available, such as mobile hotspots? Let us know so we can assist you right away.
@Mountainski23, I'm sorry you have to experience this, and I see that you already spoke with our Senior specialist. I've checked the details on your Nest Thermostat, and it's no longer in the warranty period. Please check out our Hardware Warranty Center Policy for more information.
Regards,
Mark

Yes, I still need a working thermostat. This whole process has been mind-boggling, I just can't believe that Google won't stand behind their product.

Again, explain to me why I should spend hundreds of dollars on a product that fails after two years and Google won’t stand behind, when there are many other products available with proven decades long lifespans? Why should I ever buy another Nest product when the only response to a hardware failure is to “buy a new one?” I’m sorry, that is infuriating

What am I supposed to do with this? I followed the installation and operating instructions to the letter and the device still failed. It was used in a normal house, in a normal operating environment like any other household thermostat. The previous thermostat was over 15 years old and worked fine. What could I possibly do to cause the Wi-Fi chip to fail, short of opening it up and attacking the PCB with a soldering iron? This is ridiculous.

this is not a router issue, this is for the thermostat which does not use Ethernet
