Flashing Amber Light

Flashing amber light? Wiring is good - oil furnace, red wire and white wire. Have the latest version of the Nest App installed on Samsung Galaxy phone. Have tried everything in the troubleshooting guides from everywhere! Have tried charging the unit. Have checked the input voltage. Still no joy! Help please, or this thing goes in the trash!

RJHudson,

Did you put the red wire in Rh and the white wire in C?  When you say the voltages are OK, what was the AC voltage found between Red and White wire? Your oil burner heats water for baseboard heaters or radiators or a hydronic heat exchanger in an air handler thus forced air..

It's forced air (I hate it, so dry). Still can't seem to get the Nest thermostat to work...

Hi folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thank you for the help, @CoolingWizard.

@RJHudson, I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. It appears that the system may not provide enough power or any power to either the thermostat or a specific wire (so the thermostat can’t complete a circuit and won't turn on). Let's see what's going on.

  • Make sure that the breaker switch is on.
  • After charging the display via micro USB. Has it been turned on? Are you getting any messages on the screen?
  • Is this a first-time installation?
  • Which terminal did you connect the red and white wire to the Nest thermostat?

Please have a look at this guide to troubleshoot when your thermostat won't turn on and let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

Mark

RJ, what the thermostat is designed to do is take the input voltage on R, and when heat is needed will take that voltage and connect it to the W wire.  In this particular case you have no Power Common present. As a result you’re not charging the thermostat. We need to verify that you have a 24VAC. You said you measured the voltage so what was measure and where was it measured?

Ken, The AC Cooling Wizard

Do you have a couple choices To correct this. If your furnace is indeed a 24 V AC control system then you can add a Nest power Connector in the furnace and this gets common back to the thermostat to charge it when it’s not in heating mode.
