Forgot my nest Thermostat password; New wifi modem was installed; No access to app

Tried to get into my Nest E thermostat today but can't for the life of me remember what the 4 digit password is.

Suggestions online point to app, however the home recently got a new wifi modem, therefore thermostat is not able to connect to new wifi (ie. unable to access my Nest app to update/change password and/or settings) and old modem is long gone!

Is there a master reset I can do and if so, how?

I see some posts about obtaining a file from Google support, connecting to the USB port and resetting?

Help please!??

To resolve this you'll need to reset it using a computer.

  1. Connect the Nest Thermostat display via USB to a computer.

  2. Verify that the Nest Thermostat mounts (appears as an attached drive icon).
  • If the Nest drive will not mount: Restart the thermostat and the computer.
  • If the Nest drive still won't mount: Connect another device to the cable to see if it appears as an installed device.
  • If it doesn't appear, use a different cable/port/computer.

If the Nest drive is successfully showing up on your computer, can you see a technicalinfo.PLIST file? If you get this far let me know and I'll ask a community specialist to assist with next steps, as these can't be shared publicly in the community.

Thanks David/Jeran.

Sorry for the delayed reply!

I ended up connecting with a Google nest support individual who helped walk me through the steps. Pretty straightforward for the most part and similar to some of the other posts I’ve seen.I ended up connecting with a Google nest support individual who helped walk me through the steps. The only gotcha I ran into was initially using a normal USB cable to connect to my computer versus “data transfer “ type cable.  Some USB cables are simply used for charging devices while other data transfer ones are for external USB drives, etc.  The latter is what u need!

Other than that, Support was very helpful and walked me through the whole process, while asking the right questions.  Other than that support was very helpful and walked me through the whole process, while asking the right questions.  They were very helpful helping me reset the thermostat with a file they provide, connecting to my furnace and running through some initial tests.

Thanks to everyone!
