I had a Nest Learning Thermostat installed professionally a month ago by an HVAC professional who has installed them before, and generally it works fine.
However, four separate times I've woken up in the middle of the night by the heat being too high.
I got up each time to find that the furnace was on, and the temperature was well above the temperature at which it had been set.
The first time, I tried to turn the temperature down manually, which did nothing. I tried to switch the thermostat off of the "HEAT" setting, which did nothing. Finally, I reset the thermostat, and that worked.
At first, I wrote it off as a glitch, but having it happen four times, each time in the middle of the night, at unpredictable intervals is too much. I don't want to have my sleep interrupted by having to get up and reset the thermostat.

One of the things that I always like to do when I am trying to troubleshoot problems for my customers is I turn off the features. I turn off the Home/Away Assist, Auto-Schedule, Early-On, Cool to Dry, Sunblock, Airwave. I turn the system mode to OFF. I then just basically go and perform a specific test of the system using the thermostat. I test the heating system, then turn the system off, I wait five minutes. Then I test the cooling system, unless of course it is winter then I do not test the cooling. I verify that it’s all connected and working properly. Now another test I do is the wiring. I remove the R and W wires from the backplate connection and attach them to each other and allow the heating system to come on. After the heating system runs for five minutes, I break the connection between the R wire and the W wire and see what the system does and how long it takes to shutdown. If the equipment is a heat pump, I of course use R wire connected with the appropriate wires. Again, I do this verify the thermostat wires are working as well as the control boards.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I've turned off all the options, then turned on the ones I actually want. I haven't played with the wiring – I'm not all that confident in doing so.
The biggest problem is that this is an intermittent bug. I'll wait to see if it reoccurs after the actions I've taken in response to your suggestion. Thanks!

Kindly check your thermostat's schedule. Maybe, the auto-schedule is ON, that's why it's doing that.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I have set a time schedule for the temperature to go up and down, according to our daily schedule. I checked the auto-schedule, and made sure it's off – and it is.
The hardest part of this bug is that it's intermittent.
If you have any other thoughts, I'd be interested in hearing.
