Google Nest Batteries

I just purchased and installed a Google Nest thermostat that I purchased new from Amazon and the batteries are already dead. Or at least close to dead, because the Nest is now telling me that the batteries need to be replaced. Is this normal?

It sounds as though you have the Nest Thermostat (2020 model). It's not designed to run on batteries, the batteries are a backup power source, so I wouldn't say this is unheard of. In normal circumstances, it is powered by your HVAC system, so perhaps your system is not giving the thermostat enough power.

When I go to device info, it says “Model: Thermostat-1.4
“ and device ID “641666006458975F”. Can’t really tell by searching online which model year this is, so it seems newer than 2020??? Not sure this changes your opinion, it was just disconcerting to plug the thing in brand new and have it immediately complain about dead batteries. Super easy to fix, so no big whoop, just wanted to make sure this wasn’t an indicator of a larger issue with the device. It’s been plugged in and in use without issue for the last 8 days, couldn’t be happier with the ease of installation and operation!
