Google Nest Thermostat no Heat

I am well versed in installing HVAC systems but cannot figure this one out. I purchased a Google Nest thermostat in sand color. pretty basic unit and wired it into my existing system. worked well throughout the summer with A/C. Once winter hit the system would go to heat mode and only the fan on the HVAC unit would kick on but would not run through the gas valve, burner, heat mode as a normal system would.  Red wire is in the correct placement on the unit and battery is new on the head unit thermostat. if i put in a new $30 thermostat from home depot., it will operate just fine with heating and cooling. also have common wire attached. im at a loss. thinking it may be the thermostat?
