The online Compatibility Checker has full instructions to check if your heating and cooling systems are compatible with Nest thermostats. I'd suggest using that first, then let us know if you have any further questions.

You have a 2 wire heating system.  The key is to understand if your system is a gas furnace with an integrated furnace control board. Older systems that used a standing pilot light, used a direct connection to the gas valve and used a 500 to 700 mA current. This current is sent to the thermostat on the R and when returned via the W back to the gas valve,  it would open the gas valve and start the heating cycle.  This type is not compatible.

A conventional HVAC system furnace with an IFC uses 24 V AC power Those types are fully compatible with the Nest Thermostat.
