HVAC dual zone single compressor with two dampers

Is their a way to link the two thermostats that each control a separate zone so they are intelligent?  The old 'dumb' thermostats would each call for cooling independent of each other and just turn on the AC and open the damper they need, both could and would work at the same time.

The new thermostats have a wonderful feature that runs the fan sometimes WITHOUT turning on the AC.  But unless these two systems somehow communicate this feature becomes a problem if turned on.

Is their a way to make it so this feature can be used on a dual zone system setup like I have?

Hi CowboyJeeper,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community.

Google Nest thermostats are usually compatible with zoned systems that use multiple thermostats, including zoned systems with dampers. However, some zoned systems that require thermostat damper control aren’t compatible with Nest thermostats, while other zoned systems may need a C or common wire, or the Nest Power Connector, to be compatible.

Check out this link for more details.

Ryan

Same question here.  Would a Google nest thermostat work?  I had a trane thermostat before.  The one downstairs controlled the one upstairs, and they communicated with each other so they could cool the house evenly.  There is on compressors, two zones and there are dampers as well.  Thanks.

Hello Swish2125,

I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Thanks for reaching out. In addition to what was shared above, as each thermostat calls for (activates) heat or cooling, the panel takes the first call from any zone. For example:

  1. You decide that you want heat in the living room only.
  2. You set your living room thermostat to heat mode.
  3. The damper opens for the calling zone (the area controlled by the specific thermostat; in this case, the living room damper opens).
  4. The dampers close in areas that don’t need heat.
  5. The heater (furnace or heat pump) activates and begins to supply air only to the calling zone.
  6. If thermostats in other zones call for heat while this happens, the dampers in those zones open up so the heat can also get there.

These systems save considerable energy because the HVAC system only tries to change the temperature of one part of the home instead of the whole home.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Best regards,
Mark
