Have to use a VPN to connect when at home.

I have a couple of Nest controlled zones at home and can connect via the Nest app anywhere except when I am at home.   At home the only way to use the app is to switch on a VPN so it appears to be coming from outside my home network.   Anyone experienced this or any ideas why its happening?

Hi TonyR1,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that you are not able to control your Google Nest thermostat while you are on your home network. Don't worry, I'm here to help.

Before I begin, I need to ask a few questions for further assistance:

  • In what country are you located?
  • When did this issue start?
  • Do you use APs on your network?
  • Do you have a dual-band network?
  • What steps have you tried to solve this issue?

Please keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Kevin

I’m in the UK.

This issue has been going on for a while - over a year.

Yes, I have a mesh network in the house.

Yes, it’s dual band.  I have other 2.5GHz only devices on the network (e.g. smart light bulbs and sockets) that don’t have the problem.

Not much you can do.  The NESTs are both connected to the network.   The iPhone/iPad is connected to the same network - doesn’t natter which room they’re in and whether they are on the same or different mesh nodes.   Have I missed anything.
