Heating not working correctly

Mark770
Community Member

My heating keeps being triggered whenever my hot water comes on. This never happened previously in a year of having this set up. Please can someone offer advice as my house is heating up when not needed and wasting money. My app also indicates that the heating isn't actually on

Hey @Mark770,

Thanks for reaching out. This might happen if the Heat Link is not wired correctly. Have you had work done on your electrical/heating system recently? Just to confirm, the heating turns on each time you boost the hot water?

Hi Cristian, no work done recently or since installed actually. I can elaborate a little more in that what actually seems to be now happening is that my upstairs heating is coming on whenever the water is heating yet downstairs remains off. The upstairs/downstairs aren't independent of each other and run off the single thermostat

Hey @Mark770,

Just to clarify, how many thermostats do you have? How are they wired if not independently? How many Heat Links do you have installed?

Hi, I just wanted to check in.

How has it been behaving so far? Make sure to let me know if anything else comes up.

My app keeps disconnecting from my thermostat meaning I don't have functionality to activate heating whilst away from home. At a loss as to how to fix.

Gotcha. Just to check, does the thermostat show offline in the app? Or does it not show the thermostat as all? Or does it just not respond to commands from the app?

Just in the app but is actually online so can work as per schedule. Obviously can't monitor usage history

Hi mark,

I'm having the same problem, how did you fix it? I can't seem to get a response from anyone else!

What settings did you tinker with  @Mark770 to make this issue stop?

Thank you

Very much a case of doing restarts on the thermostat. I even adjusted the temp setting on the original thermostat that is still connected. The issue returned last week so called Google support and they were barely any assistance. I've just received a booster for my home WiFi so am hoping that may be of some use and hopefully stop the issue once and for all as wonder if WiFi interference was responsible.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your help. I don't know if it helps but a quick google suggests that my 3port valve between the water and heating (in front of water cylinder) is stuck/broken - it's not able to just heat water because the valve is stuck at W or the mid point so it's heating both the water and the radiators at the same time. I found a video on youtube explaining it... https://youtu.be/rw6NhmCa-qk

I feel so bad that I blamed my nest! Just in case it's not your wifi extender I thought I'd share.

Thanks again for replying to me!

I have a customer that needs help. It is very cold and the heat isn't coming on

Hey @latoyarhoward55. I'll do my best to get this resolved. Do you hear a click sound coming from the Heat Link when you try to turn off/on the heating?

Today we have two 3rd gen thermostats installs. Once upstairs (that plugs into the wall) that controls radiators upstairs, the second downstairs hard wired into the wall where an old thermostat was. The one downstairs is supposed to control our heating downstairs and hot water tank. Neither are working and radiators not coming on.

Hey @ohg0805. If you just installed them, then the wiring might be incorrect. Could you tell me what wires you have in the Heat Link terminals?

I didn’t a nest pro engineer did but something is definitely not working - it’s almost like it isn’t connected as looks working on nest and app itself but doesn’t seem to ‘speak’ to boiler! How would I know re wiring? Can I upload a pic that would help?

.If you are comfortable in doing so, make sure to turn off the power to the Heat Link first if you do. Then take the cover off and take a picture that shows the wires clearly and which terminal each wire goes into. I might be able to notice if there is anything that needs changing.

Also if you wish to have a look at how the wiring should look, we have some examples in our installation guide, have a look here: https://bit.ly/3nt2N4t

Hi @Bounder30. If you go next to your Heat Link and turn the heating on/off, can you hear a click sound coming from it?

Hello again. Just checking in. How's it going with your thermostat?

Jenjam

Thank you it was my three port valve by the water tank that wasn't working! I feel bad I blamed my nest!

New question - which Smart TRVs work with Nest please?

Hey @Jenjam,

I'm happy to hear that you resolved the issue. Smart TRVs are not compatible with the Google Nest thermostat. You can still install them, but you won't be able to link them with the Nest.
