Hello Rspin,
this happens because the nest configurator defaults to a O type heat pumps. It sets the style to the O Model heat pump by default because there are many more O models in service than B models. There is an equipment configuration change that needs to be performed. These O types are heaters by default, and you must energize the reversing valve wire in order to get it to be in cooling mode. Here is what you need to do to fix this:
1. Go to your thermostat tap it to wake it up
2. Navigate to SETTINGS > EQUIPMENT > CONTINUE > CONTINUE > HEAT PUMP.
3. once you’re in the heat pump setting, you will see a checkmark in front of the O. Simply change it from O to B.
after that click DONE > DONE > DONE.

Thank you. That was great information and we tried it. I eventually called HVAC company and they came out and it was a bad device. So we returned it and bought an echo b which seems to have less issues than the nest. Again thank you

Thanks for the help CoolingWizard.
I am glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue, and you are good to go from here. With that being the case, and you no longer having the device, I am going to go ahead and lock the thread in 24 hours. Please let me know if you have any questions from here.
