How do I monitor online status of Nest Thermostat

Xenon2000

What is the best method on my internal network to check the online status of my Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd gen? I have a home network monitoring tool that checked and notifies me if a device is unreachable, offline. I would like to add my Nest Thermostat but when I choose Ping as the method, it only responds to ping about 10% of the time so it looks offline most of the time even though it is not offline via the Nest mobile app. I have other options besides PING to monitor.

Hi Xenon2000,

Thanks for reaching out! I am happy to help. while checking the Wi-Fi connection on the thermostat with a monitoring tool is not accurate, you can verify if your thermostat is online or not within the Nest app is the best way to check the connection WiFi on the thermostat.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Manuel

I already know my Nest thermostat is online. I use the Nest app often and it always works. I just wanted to add the Nest to my home network monitoring. I have removed it for now as ping is not reliable on my Nest for some reason and no one has an answer on other protocols for monitoring the Nest on my network such as TCP, http, etc.

Hi Xenon2000,

Thanks for the reply! It's possible your current monitoring tool isn't fully compatible with Nest thermostats. That could explain why your thermostat shows offline on the monitoring tool.

The Nest app is the best way to check your Wi-Fi connection and overall functionality of your thermostat. Here, you can easily access all the features and settings.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Manuel

I don't understand why you keep telling me about the Nest app. I already use the Nest app to control my Nest and that work fine. My question is ONLY about what communication protocols are available to check the network status of my Nest. I am currently using ping method to monitor the Nest. It is not an issue with the monitoring tool. Any software I use to ping my Nest, results in mostly no ping replies. About 10% success rate for ping protocol for me. So far no one has given any answers about protocols other than Ping.

Hi Xenon,

Thanks for the reply. I apologize, but there aren't any other ways to check the network status of the Nest Thermostat besides using the Nest app.

Manuel
