How to make thermostat wires safe after removal

Hi there!

Background

Im trying to move my Gen 3 Learning thermostat, which is currently wired, to a new location using the stand instead. Where the thermostat used to be, we are planning to put a painting so we could move the thermostat back in the future if we want. Here's the current wiring:

Question

How would you recommend making the wires safe? For example...
1. What is the best way to leave the wires so they are safe but I could use them again in the future? eg. tape or cap wires

2. Do the other end of the wires go into the Nest Heat Link? If so, can I unplug one of the wires from it so that the wires are no longer live?

Thanks so much!

Hi there and thanks for reaching our Community. To answer your question properly, cap wires are more suitable, but you should always get a second opinion from a professional installer as well. Correct, the other end of the wires are in the Heat Link, in the T1-T2 slots and to be sure and if you are comfortable to work with live current, you can disconnect them as well.
