I have had a 3rd gen Nest thermostat for a while and I have it in my Google Home app and my Nest app. I find it much easier to program in the Nest app.
I just installed a 4th gen Net thermostat in the same home (I have two heat pumps). I purchased it from my power company and I wasn't aware it would be so different. I believe it's 4th gen because it has the swipe control on the side of the unit instead of a moveable ring.
I go to the Nest app, click on the settings icon in the upper right corner, and scroll down to + Add Product. I start going through the steps to add the thermostat to my Nest app, and it immediately attempts to get me to install it in the Google Home app instead... Like it switches to the Home app as soon as I scan the QR code. Fine, whatever, I went ahead and added it to the Google Home app. But I still want it added to the Nest app! I start over, this time I skip scanning and say I will enter the code instead... I manually enter the code, and then it tells me to pick my thermostat from the list below... Based on the last four numbers of the serial number. Ok fine. But it just continues thinking and thinking and thinking and never lists any numbers for me to pick. I've tried dozens of times. I've tried restarting the thermostat, removing it from the account, re- establishing the account, I've spent entirely too long on this. I've never had any difficulty getting a Nest thermostat into a Nest app before; it's always been intuitive. My Bluetooth is on, I'm next to the thermostat, and I confirmed a strong wifi connection for both my phone and the thermostat, and I don't have a router with different wifi frequencies.
Why on Earth is this so difficult with the 4th gen?! What am I missing?

I have the exact same problem. Bought from power company 2 weeks ago. Tried most of the install tricks you did. Same result. Works fine in Google Home. Can't get it added to the Nest app whose UI I prefer.
Great post, btw. You really covered all the bases. I like it!

Have you been able to fix this? Having the same issue and we have a temperature sensor that needs to be installed through the nest app, but it won’t let me install it because it says I don’t have a thermostat installed

No fixes that we've found yet. I tried it again last month.
