I have an 8 wire heat pump, do I need learning or is the standard okay?

I purchased the standard Google nest thermostat not the learning version.

This home is equipped with a heat pump system with auxiliary heat. It is not dual fuel. I am unsure what to do with the aux wire as well as the two s wires.

Only six of the wires are used. The brown and black wires on the S terminals are for an external temperature sensor which the Nest doesn't support.

You can use the Google Nest Thermostat that you have and just match the wiring using the inner terminal labels.

Would the aux/w2 plug into the w slot for my purposes?

Hello @davidbrown722,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I understand you're following the troubleshooting steps provided by the product expert to resolve the issue with your Nest thermostat. That's great. Thanks for your effort.

I'm happy to assist you further. In some cases, a picture of your current wiring can help me diagnose the issue more quickly. Would you be able to submit one? Once I get it, I will continue helping you troubleshoot your Nest thermostat.

Please keep me updated. Thank you.

All the best,
Jorge

Hello @Chrisxhimself,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google community and for your patience while we connect you with a product expert. I appreciate your efforts in troubleshooting the thermostat issue on your own.

While we await the expert's response, I can offer some initial assistance with checking thermostat compatibility. If you're comfortable, could you send a picture of your current thermostat wiring? With that information, I can guide you through some basic compatibility checks. Of course, this might not be the solution you're ultimately looking for. Please let me know if you'd prefer to wait for the product expert's response or if there's anything else I can do to help in the meantime.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Jorge

@Patrick_Caezza  would the aux/w2 plug go into the W plug for this install?
