Inconsistently heating beyond set temperature

I installed my nest with no issue. Then the next day I left for 2 hours, and when I got home the house was 74 degrees when it was set to 68. I turned off the nest with no response to the furnace so I pulled the nest off the wall. Made sure everything was wired correctly and snapped it back on. Everything seemed to work as programmed until I woke up this morning with it 74 degrees in the house when it is programmed for 68. This thing isn't going to save me money.
