Installing Nest on a Rheem HVAC system (gas furnace + AC) - compatibility issue

Hello, I have a Rheem furnace and air conditioning system that I would like to connect to a Nest thermostat. Unfortunately the compatibility checker for Nest seems to indicate that a Nest thermostat won't work for the installation, but I'm keen to see if there's a way to make it happen.

The wires connecting to the existing thermostat are R, C, E1 and E2. The existing thermostat is a Rheem Econet UserGuide_V2_R12.pdf (globalimageserver.com) which I constantly have issues with, hence why I'd like to install a Nest thermostat.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Paul

Hello Paul,

I'm glad to hear that you're looking to upgrade your thermostat to a Nest Thermostat model for better control and reliability. While I understand that the compatibility checker isn't giving you the green light, there might still be some options to explore.

Since your current setup includes wires for R, C, E1, and E2, it's important to understand their functions and how they might interface with a Nest Thermostat. The E1 and E2 are usually associated with auxiliary heat or emergency heat functions. So we can't be sure how we can label them for the Nest Thermostat without the heating and cooling wires specifically.

Given the complexity of HVAC systems and thermostat installations, it might be wise to consult with a professional HVAC technician. They can assess your current setup, advise on compatibility issues, and potentially offer solutions or workarounds. In some cases, upgrading certain components of your HVAC system, such as the control board or wiring, might enable compatibility with a wider range of thermostats. This option could be more costly but could provide long-term benefits.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Best regards,
Mark
