Is a learning Nest compatible with a furnace using and outdoor reset

My oil fired Buderus furnace is equipped with a Honeywell outdoor reset thermostat.  The outdoor reset adjusts the temperature of the hot water flowing through the hydronic baseboards.  If it is very cold outside the ODR tells the boiler to heat to a high temp (say 180F) to warm the house.  If it is a mild cool day the furnace circulates water at a lower temp (say 130F).  A boiler without an outdoor reset would use a constant boiler temperature and the Nest thermostat can then more reliably "learn" when to start/stop heating to achieve target temperature.

So is a Nest learning thermostat compatible with an outdoor reset system?

I imagine there would be little or no energy savings with the two systems in operation.

Hi bmacd615,

Thanks for reaching out. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What's the make and model of your current thermostat?
  • How is your current thermostat wired?
  • What is the make and model of your HVAC system?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Edward

I am not using a smart thermostat yet.  I'm trying to decide if it can "learn" how to efficiently heat my house given that I have an outdoor reset.

Below is an image from the outdoor reset.  I don't think it matters what Buderus boiler I have since it is controlled by the Honeywell Aqustat outdoor reset.

In my opinion the outdoor reset will present a challenge to the learning algorithm.  When an outdoor reset is used it is recommended to simply set one temperature, say 68F, and leave it 24/7, unless something like a vacation is planned.  With a fixed indoor temperature the boiler would in principal only be circulating water a lower temperature to make modest adjustments to the room temp.  A simple dumb thermostat is sufficient for systems with an outdoor reset.

Or do you have a deeper understanding?

Thanks,

Hi bmacd615,

Thanks for the response. With the type of equipment that you have, I would suggest reaching out to our Nest Pro installers to take a closer look at your system. You can click on this link to learn more about our Nest Pro services.

Thanks,

Edward

I did look into the Nest Pro services website. It seemed they were focused on site visits and installations which I did not want to get into.  Outdoor Resets are not an unusual technology and I thought there would already be an established understanding of learning thermostats and outdoor resets.
