I bought my parents a 2020 Nest thermostat for Christmas, and I'm having some issues installing it. I installed an earlier model in our house without issues and I am quite proficient with home electrical systems, so this one is really stumping me. I installed the back plate and wired everything up, and I have checked all the connections with a multimeter. R to all the other wires reads a solid 24v. C,Y,W, and G all read as expected. However the nest thermostat will not recognize any of the wires at all. It says nothing is connected no matter what I do. Is there potentially some compatibility issue I'm not aware of, or did I get a bum unit?

Well a service man was called found the culprit. Because the screws for the nest are positioned vertically the top screw had nicked the insulation on the wires inside the wall and blown a fuse in the air handler. Fuse was replaced and it seems to be working now. Kind of bad design on Google's end to put a screw right where the wires are likely to run.
