Low Battery Warning

RPGR90s

I am out of town and after a month, my thermostat shows as OFFLINE in my Iphone Nest app. The message on my phone reads, "Thermostat doesn't have enough power for Wi-Fi"

I had my neighbor go into the house and reset the unit and it came back online, but that only lasted a day and it went offline again.

This happened the last time I went out of town. When I got back home, I checked the battery voltage, and it said it was within the normal range. So I assumed everything would be ok.

The thermostat never seems to go offline when I'm home, but only after I'm away for a month or so.

Since I'm not home for another three weeks, I am hoping/wondering if the thermostat will keep my preset temp of 50F even if offline.

And a question: If the Nest is hooked up to the furnace properly, why does the battery in the Nest unit go low OR cause the unit to go offline? IOW, what's the purpose of the battery? And can it be easily replaced? I believe mine is soldered in.

Thanks very much for reading.

Hi @RPGR90s!

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest thermostat is going offline while you're away, showing a message that it doesn't have enough power for Wi-Fi. I appreciate your efforts in taking steps like having your neighbor reset the unit. I'm happy to help you!

To help me find the best solution, I'll need to ask you a few questions:

  • Which specific model of Nest Thermostat do you have (e.g., Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E)?
  • How long has the thermostat been installed and working correctly before this issue started occurring during your trips?
  • In addition to the error message, do you know if your neighbor noticed any error codes on the Nest thermostat?
  • What is the make and model of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment?
  • Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?
  • Does the thermostat charge with a USB cable?
  • Have you experienced any power outages recently in your home?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi
