My Nest thermostat E (1st Gen) randomly goes offline with Error (No Power/Red). Can I jump C & R?

Resetting/Restarting has no affect.  The last time it did this it came back online after about 28 hours and worked for 3 days, now I'm getting the Error/Offline message for no power/red wire.  I'm wondering if jumping or splicing the C and R wire would work.
