Nest 3rd Gen UK Hot Water question - Black or orange icon

harrismix

Hi, I'm in the UK and recently had a 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat installed, I have a question: When I switch on the hot water manually (boost), the boiler starts fine and the hot water icon appears on the Nest app - but the icon and the hot water boost page is in black . . .  after say 5 minutes the icon and page turn orange, then it goes back to black after say 20 mins (even if I've set a 30 min hot water boost) . . .  Can anyone please tell me why it's in black at the start/end and only orange for a short while?  I should add that I have a system boiler (separate water cylinder) I don't know the significance of what the black and orange means in relation to the hot water boost. Thanks

Hi @harrismix, thanks for reaching out. The menu you refer to in the Nest app has an interactive interface. Sometimes it turns orange and shows the ON message, sometimes it just shows ON and remains grey/black. When you boost the hot water, does the boiler start as it should, regardless of the color you see in the app?

Thanks for the response, yes the boiler starts straight away (and hot water starts to heat) while the app shows a black background . . . then after a few minutes the background turns orange . . .  then after say 25 minutes of a 30 min boost (presumably when it senses the water is hot enough) the app goes to black background again and the boiler turns off.  So I am wondering what the significance is of the black and orange app backgrounds, what triggers it to go from black to orange?

Hey @harrismix. As long as the hot water icon says that it's ON, your hot water is being heated. When the temperature of the hot water has reached the flow temperature, the thermostat will stop heating it even if it still appears as ON. It's much like the heating part. As for when it turns orange, it doesn't have a significance. It's an interactive feature and it will turn orange at random while the hot water is being boosted.

Thanks! That really helps - I'd still like to get an understanding of the orange (as an interactive feature) - do some people find it goes orange immediately or is it always black first? I've seen it goes black again before it switches the hot water off . . .

Hi @harrismix. It's usually black the first few seconds and then it turns orange. However it might not turn orange at all.
