Nest Gen 3 will not boot up after changingto a new battery

My Nest 3rd Gen will not boot/ start after changing battery.  The WIFI said that the battery was low and needed a new one.  So I found out the battery size by opening it.  It is a flat 1.7 X 2.0 X 0.1 inch battery.  It has 3 wires to a connector, red, white, and black. I charged the Nest with a USB charger for several hours and when I hook it back up to the base, It just flashes a red light at the top of the thermostat.  I tried to put the old battery back into it and it just flashes red.  Even after a day of just setting on the base.  I checked the connector and all is working.   I am an electrical engr familiar with electronics and Ham Radio.

I assume you purschased the correct rated battery, not just the size? There are some dodgy batteries if purchased on ebay for example.

Sounds like you have a bit of an issue now, as removing the battery invalidates the warranty!

Given your background as an electrical engineer familiar with electronics and ham radio, you've likely covered the basics thoroughly. However, if the thermostat is still flashing a red light, it may indicate a persistent issue. Here are a few additional suggestions:

 

  1. Try performing a hard reset on the thermostat. Press and hold the thermostat display for about 10–15 seconds until the screen goes black. Then release it and wait for it to reboot. This might help to clear any glitches.
  2. Carefully inspect the thermostat for any physical damage that might have occurred during the battery replacement process. Check for loose connections or damaged components.
  3. Inspect that all wires are properly connected and that the HVAC system is turned on.
  4. Did you see any message that appeared on the thermostat display when charging?
  5. From what country are you posting?
