You have separate O and B wires is the problem why it says not cpmaptible.

Most heat pumps only have one wire (the O/B wire usually orange) that switches the outdoor unit reversing valve to heat or cooling mode.

Is the heat pump an older unit?

Do you have access to the indoor unit so you can remove the cover and confirm if both the O and B are connected at the air handler.

Yes it’s an older heat pump, around 2008ish, but I will go see if they are connected to the air handler and get back to you! Thank you

That is not that old and I would think it only needs one wire to operate.

If you can go to the indoor unit take a pic of the wires connected to the terminal screws so we can see the labels on each screw.

Also on the back of the cover there is usually a decal showing the thermostat wiring diagram take a pic of that.

Is the outdoor unit the same brand and age as the indoor unit?

Do you see any wiring diagram decals on the removable cover for the blower?

OK you have a Gas furnace forced air but do you also have a Heat Pump?

Does the outdoor unit run to provide heat and the gas furnace is used as backup heat?

So do you know it is just an air conditioner outside or a Heat Pump and air conditioner?

You might need to go outside get the make and model number on decal and also take a pic of the thermostat wires connected outside and a pic of any wiring diagrams on the unit.

Some heat pumps have both O and B wires to the outdoor reversing valve that make it change the valve position between Heat and AC mode.

Yes we also have a heat pump.

The gas furnace is not the backup

Heat pump and AC outside.

and okay I’ll send a pic of those!

How were you controlling what was supplying the heat with the old thermostat?

Usually in mild temp you use the heat pump and when it's really cold you switch over to the gas furnace as the 2nd source of heat aka emergency heat.

So did you manually flip a switch on the old tstat to make the gas furnace take over?
