Nest Learning Thermostat

MaryH70
Community Member

I have had a Learning thermostat installed with my new central heating boiler, but we have no wifi/internet connection. I let this property and not live there myself. How can i manually get it started and programme it. WE will not be using  a phone or an App. We just want to basically control it manually. Virtually all the info assumes that you have internet.

Anyone out there who can help?

Thanks Isobel

Thanks very much for your reply  johnCNA! Also, As we don’t live there and we are just doing some work at the house at various times, can we set the nest up manually to achieve  the safety aspect ie so that the pipes won’t freeze?

thank you!

Sure. It has a 'Safety Temp' setting setting so it never goes below that. You can also set schedules if you want.  All can be set manually from the Nest dial. I would advise turning Home/Away Assist OFF in your case, as well as Auto Schedule OFF since you aren't often there.

There's a lot of topics on the internet about manual setting schedules, but press the display - Schedule - then set your desired temperatures for the days.

You can set up scheduling on the Nest itself or just operate it manually.

Thanks MelbaDT for your post. To be honest I’m getting really confused with the whole nest thing! As I’ve said in earlier posts, I don’t live at this house, so all I want ( until someone rents ) is to be able to cancel/ disable any previous “ schedules” and then I need to have the thermostat “off” mode, though still using “safety temperature” option.

However, I am actually confused about using the nest itself!  eg “press the ring”, “select” , how to confirm a choice, “press down”, “done” . My problems are as basic as this! Have been up to the house to try to set the thermostat for my situation. The instructions say it doesn’t have a touch screen, yet I am pressing it. Don’t know how to bring up the Quick Menu.  I printed off lots of stuff after “John” and “frustrated” made very helpful suggestions. I know what I need to do, but can’t do it! I think it is perhaps an age thing that I can’t even get properly started!  Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh, if I am finally able to achieve the “off” mode, am I then able to go into the house at a future time and just turn the temperature up to get the heating on, or do I turn “off” mode back to “on”? What a nightmare for a 70-year-old!!!!

Thank all of you folks out there for trying to get me up-and-running!

MaryH70, stick with it.  It's pretty simple when you get the hang of it.

Here's a quick start - the Nest does not have a touch screen like your phone.  I call it a 'click screen'.  Press the whole screen with a firmer press than you would use on your phone.  You will feel it click like your mouse button on the computer.  The whole Nest rotates like a dial to navigate through menus and you click the screen to select something.

You could learn more of the options and settings by watching some of the many videos on YouTube.com.  Just go to YouTube and search for 'Nest Learning Thermostat'. They might not answer your particular setting questions, but you'll get a better feel for navigating the settings and selecting options.
