Nest Temperature Increasing When Set To Cool

Bruce2585
Community Member

I just bought a google nest and installed it a week ago. Everytime I set the thermostat to cool (70 degrees) the air kicks on and I can feel cold air coming out of the vents, but the nest temperature reading does not go down. It was reading 74 degrees and after a few hours, it increases a little and sometimes goes up to 78 degrees. I don't understand it because the rooms in our house feel cool too so I know the AC is working. The AC is just continuously running and the theromost temperature reading just keeps increasing. The thermostat is located in the hallway so there is no heat source near it that could cause this temp increase. Our old thermostat did not have this problem either so maybe there something wrong with the temperature sensor in the nest.

Hi Bruce2585,

Thank you for your response.

Please check the following:

Make sure all thermostat wires are fully inserted:

  1. Turn off power to your system at the fuse box or system switch. This will help prevent damage to your system and help keep you safe.
  2. Pull off the Nest thermostat display.
  3. Check that all connectors that have wires are down (see picture below).
  4. If needed, re-insert wires so that the connector button stays fully pressed down. If the button isn’t down, your Nest thermostat won’t know there’s a wire in the connector.
  5. You may need to re-strip and straighten the wire ends so that they can be fully inserted into the Nest base’s connectors.
  6. Terminal button

Please keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Byron

I just installed a near as well and same issue- the air is on and cooling but the inside temp fluctuates between 77 and 78 ( I am set to cool to 73).  Also can’t get the n260 code to shut off- only four solid wires to my prior thermostat but was a blue wrapped up- tried both with and without the blue connected to the c slot- still get a message

Hi Folks,

Thank you for posting here in the community. I'm sorry that you have this situation with your Nest Thermostat. I understand how frustrating it is when it shows an increase in temperature. Help is here.

I just want to confirm:

  • Which thermostat do you have?
  • Do you have any schedule temperature set?

Please keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Byron

Alright I have taken all the wires out and stripped them and put them back in to make sure they were like the picture. The nest is detecting all the wires like it did before and I still have the same issue of the temperature not cooling down.

Hi Bruce2585,

Thank you for posting. I really appreciate your effort about this concern.

Please try the following:

Some common symptoms indicate that your system may need professional maintenance:

  • Your Nest thermostat screen turns blue when you want cooling or orange when you want heat, but your system doesn’t turn on.
    • Note: When your thermostat’s screen changes color, it’s trying to turn your system on.
  • Your system works normally for a while after you restart it, but one or more odd behaviors listed above in this article’s introduction eventually return.

  1. Test by turning power to your system off at the breaker switch.
  2. Wait a few minutes and turn the power back on.
  3. If the issue seemed to fix itself but then returns after a short while, your system may need maintenance.

To diagnose possible system maintenance issues yourself, you can install your old thermostat and test your system. This will help you tell if there’s a maintenance problem with your system or if your system simply isn’t providing enough power to your thermostat.

  1. Turn off power to your system at the fuse box or system switch. This will help prevent damage to your system and help keep you safe.
  2. Uninstall your Nest thermostat.
  3. Connect your old thermostat. Use the picture you took of your old thermostat’s connectors during the installation of your Nest thermostat to help you know where each wire should go on your old thermostat.
    • If your system works correctly with your old thermostat reinstalled, then there may be a wiring or power issue with your Nest thermostat installation. You may need a common (C) wire or the Nest Power Connector installed. You may be able to connect an existing C wire or install the power connector yourself, but contact a local professional to install a new C wire and troubleshoot any other issues.
    • If your system doesn’t work correctly with your old thermostat and you see the same issues you had with the Nest thermostat, your system may need maintenance. Contact a local professional to diagnose and fix issues with your system.

Please keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

We tested both the cooling and heating functions and you can feel the cold and hot air coming out of the vent but it's just not changing the temperature reading on the thermostat. My nest already has a common wire installed in it too. I can try putting the old thermostat back on and see what that does.

Hello Byron.

I have put the old thermostat on and the temperature in my house started to drop. I then decided to put the nest back on again and did some testing with opening and closing different vents in the house to try and force more air to other areas. Turns out this worked. After running the air for 24 hours the temperature has decreased with the nest on and is staying at the temperature I have it set too. Not sure why it didn't work at first but it is working now.
