Nest Thermostat Low Battery

I've had my Nest thermostat for 5 months. All has been perfect up until around a month ago when I got a low battery display on my thermostat. I replaced the batteries and it said the batteries were still low. I assumed the batteries must have went bad in my drawer. I went out to the store and bought a new pack of batteries, same issue. My thermostat is still saying low batteries with a fresh set. I hooked a multimeter up to the batteries and they say 1.41 volts. Inside the home app it says the battery voltage is 1.23 volts. When I look at the battery voltage directly on the thermostat display, it says 1.43 volts. I have made sure there is no dirt blocking the contacts for the battery on the backside of the thermostat. My thermostat is also connected to a C wire. When looking at the nest display it confirms the C wire is connected and shows a VIN of ~38 volts. Does anyone know how to get rid of this low battery display?

Hi Dagdandris,

Thanks for reaching out and for being a step ahead of us. It looks like you have the Nest Thermostat 2020. To confirm, what type of batteries did you use for your thermostat?

Try putting back the old batteries and check your thermostat battery impedance. Impedance is an indicator that the batteries need replacement. To do this, on the thermostat display, please go to Settings and then Battery and then Battery Status.

If impedance is still higher than 1500 mΩ, put back the new batteries.

Please keep me posted.

Best,

Jenelyn

I previously had Energizer batteries in my thermostat. However I threw them away. I now have brand new Amazon Basics batteries in them. When I check the impedance it says N/A.

Hi folks,

@Dagdandris, If you've replaced the batteries in your Nest Thermostat with fresh ones and are still experiencing a low battery display, there are a few potential causes and troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Make sure the battery contacts on the backside of the thermostat are clean and free of any dirt or debris. Use a soft cloth or cotton swab to gently clean the contacts, ensuring good electrical contact with the batteries.
  2. Ensure that your Nest Thermostat has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, firmware updates can address known issues and improve battery performance. Check the Nest app or website for any available updates and follow the instructions to install them.
  3. Try restarting your Nest Thermostat by removing it from the base and reattaching it. Sometimes, a simple restart can help resolve temporary glitches or issues.
  4. Even if your thermostat is connected to a C wire, there may be wiring issues or a loose connection that is causing the low battery display. Double-check the wiring connections at both the thermostat and HVAC system ends to ensure they are secure and properly connected.

I appreciate your help, Jenelyn.

Thanks,

Zoe
