Nest Thermostat Motion Detector

Model: Thermostat-1.4

I installed a new Nest Thermostat (the 1st Gen model, NOT a Learning Thermostat). HVAC is gas powered forced air (no cooling system or heat pumps)

It works OK -  heat goes on and off - except the motion detector. No matter how I "approach" the thermostat (mounted chest high) it doesn't sense my presence and light the display.  I have to touch the thermostat on the right to get the display to illuminate. Confirmed the relevant setting in the App is correct ("On Approach --> toggled ON), reset the device at least twice. Batteries are new and Status = Good. No other weirdness except I do have an N260 caution on the display, indicating I may need an alternate power source? Not sure. In any case, as installed it is otherwise working fine. Any thoughts or suggestions on dysfunctional motion detector?

Update: I examined the wiring in my furnace. Discovered the blue wire was disconnected. Called my HVAC guy who told me the old thermostat (battery operated) didn't require it.

So I connected it and voila! Nest thermostat no longer showing an equipment error, but better yet, the motion sensor started working. Oh happy days!

@Rod2660 , N type errors tend to relate to wire connectivity issues. Such as. No current sensed on the wire when energized. There is a sensor in the display that detects your presence. There is no setting for this feature on the app. On the Nest Display the featured is called Farsight.  Going to SETTINGS>DISPLAY on the thermostat is where you can change the Farsight settings.  Here you can decide what to display when it senses your presence.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, there is no Display option under the Settings menu on my thermostat.

All I can say is you need to look for the FARSIGHT settings.

It seems my Nest thermostat does not implement a motion sensor. Therefore there's no farsight setting for it. I'm not permitted to upload images here, but if you look at that link, my thermostat version is the one shown in the upper left hand corner, the one with a mirrored screen.
