Nest Thermostat Raised Gas/Heat Bill

I recently had my energy company upgrade us to Nest Thermostat so we can use the rebate they offered us for heating and cooling. We have our temperature set to Eco and we earn leaves when we can. Our Gas bill has increased X2 since last year when we used our heat. We have it set to Eco while out of the house( 2 cats are still home) and have it set with schedules. Yet, our bill has skyrocket and shows we are consuming lots of gas per day on a eco friendly time frame while home and way based on recommendations. We and we have it set to Heat/Cool. Any help or ideas to why this is?

Hi brandanx5,

Uh-oh! If your gas bill has increased significantly since upgrading to a Nest Thermostat and setting it to Eco mode, despite following the recommended energy-saving practices, there could be several factors contributing to this issue. Here are a few possible explanations to consider:

  1. The thermostat may not be accurately sensing the temperature in your home, leading to inefficient heating or cooling. Ensure that the thermostat is properly installed and located away from any drafts or heat sources that could affect its readings. You may also want to check if the temperature sensors on the thermostat are clean and free from any obstructions.
  2. Review the temperature schedules you have set on your Nest Thermostat. Make sure the temperature settings align with your comfort preferences and occupancy patterns. If the schedules are not properly optimized, it could result in excessive heating or cooling when you're not at home or unnecessary energy consumption during occupied times.
  3. Verify that your Nest Thermostat is properly configured to work with your specific heating and cooling equipment. If the thermostat is not configured correctly, it may not be operating efficiently or utilizing energy-saving features effectively.
  4. Consider any changes in external factors that might be impacting your energy consumption. For example, if there have been changes in weather patterns, increased insulation needs, or other factors affecting your home's heating or cooling demand, it could contribute to higher gas usage and energy bills.
  5. Confirm that your heating and cooling system is fully compatible with the Nest Thermostat. Some systems may require additional components or modifications to work optimally with smart thermostats. You may send us a wiring photo of your previous thermostat and a photo of how you connected the wires to the Nest Thermostat base so I can take a closer look.

To address the issue, you can take the following steps:

  1. Verify the thermostat's accuracy and placement.
  2. Review and optimize your temperature schedules.
  3. Double-check the configuration and compatibility of your Nest Thermostat.
  4. Consider reaching out to your energy company or a professional HVAC technician for a thorough assessment of your system and energy usage. They can provide specific guidance based on your setup and help identify any potential issues or inefficiencies that are causing the increased gas consumption and higher bills.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe
