Nest Thermostat Stand-Alone

Wojo

Can the Nest Thermostat (powered just by its internal two AA batteries) be used as a stand-alone wi-fi thermometer?  I want to monitor temperature in several rooms without actually controlling the temp.  The house has wi-fi.

Wojo,

That is exactly what I am trying to do: use the Nest Thermostat as a remote access thermometer using wifi but not connected to a heating source.  I see that technical support staff has not answered your question in 7 months.  Not a good sign.

Hi Wojo,

I moved on to the Emerson Sensi.  Install tomorrow.  I'll let you know how it works.  Better prospects than Nest.

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting and I'm sorry for the late response. To answer the question, we can't set up the Google Nest Thermostat without an HVAC connected to it. The setup process won't proceed if it's not detecting any wires connected to it.

Thanks,

Edward

Will look into the Emerson Sensi.  Looking forward to hearing about your experience after install.
BTW - I’ve purchased about a dizen Nest thermostats for several homes.  Have been eyeing the smoke detectors.  Would really like to see more product offerings and better pricing.

Hi EdwardT and Wojo,

I moved on to the Emerson Sensi Smart Thermostat.  It connects to my free standing gas fireplace with only the two thermostat wires and one added "C" wire from the $17 VIIVRIA  24 Volt Transformer, C Wire Adapter from Amazon.  It was easy to install and connect to my wifi and my phone.  I can check the temperature remotely any time.  My only issue is that Sensi sends a too hot and too cold alarm only through email.  I would like a text message warning also as I often do not check my emails every day.  I will contact them about that.  Also, I have not yet tested if the Sensi thermostat automatically re-connects to the internet in case of a power outage and restore.
