Nest Thermostat controlled by landlord. Can I remove the display from the base?

My landlord had to install the nest in the middle of the living room wall. My question is, does the nest need the display for the landlord to control the temperature, or can I remove the display and hide the base behind a painting, because it's an eyesore and I have no control over the temp in my apartment anyways. Obviously there's a sensor on it and it won't read accurately if I move it. I'm ok with that. Will the user with the app know I've disconnected the display?

If you disconnect the nest from the base the HVAC system will stop functioning all together the base is just a port where all electronics and features are inside the device itself

@Yura1985 , Typically the thermostat is located near the place that air return is located.  If you want to relocate the thermostat, you must also relocate the thermostat cable. Who pays for the electricity of your apartment?
