Nest Thermostat gen3 keeps saying remove from base and then put back on base.

Hi,

My Nest Thermostat is saying to remove from the base - then says to put back on.  It's a constant loop.

I've tried holding the ring down to reset, I've tried charging with USB and other suggestions, nothing has worked.

From what I've read it may need a new base plate, but they are no longer available to purchase.

Help!

@therealfoz

How do you have the thermostat wired?

Is there a C wire installed?

Can you post a picture of the thermostat's wiring?

Thanks for the reply. Yes I do have a common.
Here’s a pic of the wiring… note my red is unplugged here because I was trying both RC and RH, but it was the same for both.

Hi folks!

@Patrick_Caezza  thanks for your assistance.

@therealfoz  I’m sorry for the inconveniences that you’ve been experiencing with your Nest Thermostat 3rd generation. I understand that it’s been working with a constant loop that asks you to remove the thermostat from its base and then reattach it. I know you have already followed some troubleshooting steps; you already charged the device using an USB cable and also tried a reset on the device but still not working. No worries, I’m glad to help you in this.

Here are some extra steps for you:

  • Remove the display from the base.
  • Perform a hard restart on the thermostat.
    • Press the thermostat ring until the screen turns off; it could take about 10 seconds.
  • While the display is detached from the base, wait for the thermostat to turn back on and display the message: “Please attach the display to its base.”

I also will suggest you check the 20-pin connector for any visible damage. Make sure the pins are straight and in good condition.

You can check the following articles for further information: Restart or reset a Nest thermostat

Tell me how it goes.

Regards,

Daniel.

Hi Daniel, thanks for the reply.

i did do a hard reset a little while ago after reading that troubleshooting step on another site.

It seemed to do something.. took awhile to ‘boot’ back up and brought me to the language screen that’s at the beginning of the setup. I hadn’t seed that screen before. However after going through a couple screens of setup it said it needed to shutdown to charge the battery.
This is after I had it charging via USB all night. I’m wondering if the battery is bad in it?
