Nest Thermostat is not sending signal to turn on reversing solenoid Valve

My 3rd Generation Nest, about 8 years old, had a recent software update March of 2025.  As a result it is no longer powering the RSV valve on my heat pump to switch it to cooling.  I have reset and removed from my Nest products and then added back.  I thought it was the controller board ($100) so I replaced it and that did not correct it.  Put in a non programmable thermostat and all works fine.  Two different service tech immediately said it was my Nest and then recommended Ecobee.  I would really like to stay with Nest.

So is it the software or did my thermostat really bite the dust?

Hi - i think I am having a similar issue. When I put the system on cool mode it still blows hot air. I have another gen3 that also had the software update, but it works correctly when installed in that location.

I'm having the same issue.

My 4 year old gen3 had operated my heat pump without issue until Monday. The first warm day of the season I asked it to cool and instead it blew hot air. I figured the reversing valve solenoid had gone bad.  It had also recently received the 6.3-5 software update. Techs confirmed today that it was no longer supplying the 24V output to the solenoid on the reversing valve.  Reinstalling the old dumb thermostat fixed the issue.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen is not sending a signal to turn on reversing the Solenoid Valve, but there's no need to worry; I'm happy to help you right now.

I appreciate the troubleshooting you have done with your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen. To get a better understanding of the situation, please help me out by answering the following questions:

  • Is this the first time you’re calling for cooling this year? If yes, did the heating work without issues in the winter?
  • When did cooling last work?
  • Do you see a power error code on your thermostat?
  • Have you set up a temperature schedule for your thermostat?
  • Can you please send me a picture of the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,

Gabriela
