Nest Thermostat not turning on automatically

geneg21

I recently installed a Nest Thermostat but, for some reason, the heat (furnace) does not turn on automatically at the scheduled time nor does it turn on if I manually increase the temperature on the display. However, if I go to the "Fan" setting and tell it to run for any amount of time (15 minutes, 30, 45, 60, etc), the heat (furnace) kicks on and produces heat. I can do this both from the display as well as from the phone app. I have a forced air (oil) system and the house is only about 20 years old. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to follow up and see if I could be of any help. I found an article with more details on the temperature schedule. I also found an article with some troubleshooting steps for strange heating behavior. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Best regards,
Jake

Hi Jake,

Thank you for the reply. I've gone through both articles and I'm still having the same issue. What I've discovered through my troubleshooting is that if I turn the "fan" setting on, whether manually or scheduled (e.g. run fan for an hour every day at 6pm), that works fine. In the current setup, the fan does in fact blow heat (I'm assuming because I have the thermostat set to the "heat" setting). However, if I try to activate the heat through either a scheduled temperature change and manually by adjusting the temperature on the thermostat, it's not kicking on (although the thermostat shows the temperature that I'm trying to set it to). Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the late response. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Thanks for letting us know, @geneg21. I understand that the schedule might be confusing with the fan, but make sure that you've selected the correct heat type (forced air). You can verify it by going to your actual thermostat's equipment settings. If so, try restarting it to refresh and clear all the scheduled temperatures to see if the fan will turn on automatically. Let us know if it works.

Thanks for helping here, Jake.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for getting back to me. This was back in December and after doing more research, I found somebody that suggested that I should do a factory reset of the thermostat and when I set it up again, rather than select "oil" as the fuel, I should select "gas" (even though it is in fact oil). I'm guessing because it's forced air, that's why the thermostat had a hard time properly communicating with the furnace?

Unfortunately, when I did the reset to try to make this change, the thermostat wouldn't boot up all the way to the point where I could even enter any information. I tried unsuccessfully resetting several times with no luck. Finally, I just had enough of the whole thing, having spent way too much time on this, and returned it back to  the store and bought something else.

Hello geneg21,

Setting up in the wrong configuration could cause HVAC system issues. I'm sorry you have to experience this, and we hope you can have a better time. I'll go ahead and lock this thread within 24 hours. If you ever change your mind, we'll be here to help.

Best regards,

Mark
