Nest Thermostat stopped working

Jason14

There's no one real problem really, one thing seems to have led to another.

It kept going offline, read that wifi problems can cause this so wanted to reset Wi-Fi. Really struggled here, it kept restarting itself and not giving you long enough on the menu to do it. But eventually managed to reset the network connections.

Now I want to reset rest so try doing that. Again can't stay in the menu long enough before it loops back and resets.

It has 11.85v across t1 and t2, and the c wire is connected. Not sure what the voltage range tolerance is. But its been good since it was purchase and installed in November 2022. I have tried charging on a usb charger but seems to have no effect.

Now it's stuck complaining about the date and time. But again won't stay in the menus long enough to set, before it restarts itself again!

Any ideas?

Hi Jason14,

Yikes! Let's sort this out. A few questions:

  1. Are you located in North America or Europe?
  2. What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  3. When did this first occur?
  4. If the thermostat was recently installed, what is the make and model of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment?
  5. Are the power breakers on, and do you receive power to your home?
  6. Is the thermostat's display seated properly?
  7. Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?
  8. Did you charge the thermostat using a micro-USB cable?
  9. Did you try to use another micro-USB cable to charge the thermostat?
  10. For how long did you charge your thermostat display?

Also, please help us with the power readings of your Nest Thermostat. If you have the Nest Learning Thermostat or the Nest Thermostat E, go to Settings > Technical Info > Power then list down its Battery, VOC, VIN, and lIN. For Nest Thermostat 2020, gather the VIN, IIN, PS-* under Settings > Equipment > Power Info

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Zoe

Hi Zoe,

Thanks for the detailed response. Power etc all Ok, had been working fine for 10 months. Battery level around 3.8v, with 12v at the power terminals.

In Europe by the way.

Spoke to someone at Google yesterday and talked through all the trouble shooting I had done. They decided it was a faulty Wi-Fi chip, and have sent a replacement thermostat. Have installed this today and it appears to be working just fine!

Thanks

Jason

Hello there, Jason! I am glad to hear that you've been taken care of by my colleagues! Should anything else come up, feel free to reach us back.

Good day. I need my nest thermostat replacement. It is not changing and I do not know what is wrong. I even tried charging it directly with a charger. When I scan the QR this information is given when selecting TEXT:

$L:CCA7C10000190E28$W:CCA7C12436B3$C:

The last time this happened to me you sent me a new one and I sent you the bad one (just the thermostat).

Please assist and thank you,

Frederic

Thanks for all the information you provided @Frederic75088. Could you please tell me if the thermostat is responsive at all at this moment?

Good morning. No it won't charge. I tried charging it directly in the back connector. I'm doing it again now.

Please try to charge it off the base, for about 90 minutes, directly from a power socket with a micro USB cable.

I just told you that's what I did.  After that it worked for about a day and it is out of charge. I know it's this device because I have another nest from downstairs that I put up here & it works fine. It doesn't lose charge and it recognizes my wifi network. Please send a new one and I'll send this one.

Thanks for clarifying. In that case please charge it like before one more time and after go to Settings> Reset> Network. Once this is done, don't try to connect it back to the Wi-Fi. Perform this reset 2 times, one after the other. Once done, go to Settings> Technical info> Power and take a picture of the power readings there. We want to see both the battery voltage and the Vin value. After you have that, check in later, a few hours perhaps and take another picture of the readings.

We need to check if the battery voltage slowly drains over time while disconnected from the Wi-Fi.

How do I add a photo here?

Pretty funny I was just on phone support because, as all nest thermostats, the thermostat lost all Wi-Fi connectivity and spent a literal hour trying to get them a picture.

In settings, reset, "network" isn't an option.

If you can't add a picture, just tell us the Battery, VIN, VUSB and IIN values. Also if you access Settings > Reset then there should be the option "All Networks".

Batt: 3.798V, VOC: 37.75V, VIN: 37.75V, lin: 200mA (c),VUSB & IIN values: not showing.

Just to confirm, the VIN is 37.75 and by any chance, there's no typo, right?

If you give me an email I can attach the photo of the specs.

Correct

Good day,

Please assist.  It has been in the 30s & 40s here in the DFW for the past week.  I have to take the good nest thermostat up & down stairs to maintain temperatures between the 2 systems.

I sent the info, I received no solution. Now on the middle of the night I woke up cold because it won't hold a charge. I wonder if you are going to help me solve this problem.

Can you read through this messaging history & assist me please.

Hi there, just checking in! Did you see the message from my colleague?

Could you please assist. My nest isn't working and TudorL, LarisalL, AlexD, Mitcom2, and Vladut have stopped responding to me.  It is in the 30-40s here in Dallas and I have 1 hvac not working because of the Nest thermostat.  Please assist.
