Nest Thermostat tripping switch

Hi

My nest thermostat which has been working successfully for six or seven years now keeps tripping the consumer unit switch. When I put the switch back on the power comes to the nest then it trips again straightaway. Anyone any ideas why this might be happening?

thanks

paul

Hi @Paulmccarrison,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Nest thermostat keeps tripping the consumer unit switch. I understand your concern, particularly since it functioned correctly for approximately six or seven years, and the power returns only to trip again immediately after resetting the switch. I'd be happy to help!

To better investigate the situation, I'd like to ask the following:

  • Could you please confirm the specific model and generation of your Nest thermostat? Here’s a helpful article about how to identify your thermostat model.
  • What is the make and model of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment?
  • Did you receive any specific error code?
  • Have there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?
  • Would you mind sharing a picture of your current wiring installation on your Nest thermostat?

In the meantime, I'd like to suggest the following:

  • Confirm all wires are tightly seated in their terminals and there are no exposed wires. Also, check for moisture near the thermostat wiring, as this can cause a short circuit. Important: Before touching any wires, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box.

Kindly note that a qualified technician may be required. Over time, Nest thermostats can experience degradation, including wear on system components and voltage/tolerance fluctuations, which can cause an incompatibility where there wasn’t one before.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

I think it is the heating system rather than the nest.

Hi Paulmccarrison,

Thanks for following up!

In this case, it would be very helpful if you could contact a qualified professional technician to check the HVAC system and help determine what is causing this behavior. This will also help move the case forward and better identify whether the issue is related to the HVAC system or the Nest thermostat.

Also, if you can share the requested information above, I can help you more effectively.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
