Nest offline while away for extended time

The WiFi in my home went down briefly and my Nest is now online while all my other WiFi connected devices are online. I set my schedule before leaving the house to heat at a constant temperature everyday. My question is if my Nest is still working and furnace running.  I have rebooted my router remotely. It looked like the Nest tried to reconnect but was unable to. Again all other devices connected and power is on.

the big question is why Nest does not have a way to solve this problem via the app. I have tried everything. This occasionally happens and I have to reconnect via the Nest thermostat.

Hello Momoftwo,

Thanks for reaching out! I understand the frustration you're experiencing with your Nest Thermostat after a brief WiFi outage. It can be inconvenient when smart devices struggle to reconnect automatically.

It seems like you've taken the right steps by rebooting your router remotely. While the Nest Thermostat is designed to reconnect automatically, occasional issues may arise. To troubleshoot further, you can try the following:

  1. Ensure the thermostat is within a reasonable range of your WiFi router.
  2. Double-check that the WiFi network credentials entered in the Nest app are correct.
  3. Power cycle the thermostat by removing it from the base for a few seconds and then reattaching it.
  4. Check for any message code or reports in the settings.

If the problem persists, check the power status on your thermostat's Equipment settings or Technical Info settings, depending on the Nest Thermostat version you have.

Keep me posted on how it goes.

Regards,
Mark

Thanks for the reply Mark. Unfortunately I am still hundreds of miles away so no way to do what you suggested until I get home. The Nest is just several feet away from the router so that is not an issue. I just wish the manufacturer made it easier to do this remotely.  I wonder what happens to snowbirds who go away for many months. Perhaps Nest is not the best product for us.

Thanks for your help

Donna

Hey there,

I totally understand your situation with the remote accessibility of the Nest Thermostat. It can be a bit inconvenient, especially for those who are often away from home. By any chance, do you have someone you trust, such as family or friends, who can check your thermostat? If so, restarting the thermostat might do the trick, and ask them to inspect the power readouts in its Equipment settings or in the Technical Info settings, depending on the thermostat version you have.

Thanks,
Mark

Unfortunately no one who would have a clue how to do it. I’m an IT professional and it’s not as intuitive as it should be. You should be able to get it to connect via app. To me this is a fatal flaw in the product. If this was summer it wouldn’t be so bad but I have no clue if the heat is on in my house and it’s in a cold location.
