Nest sensor with Nest Thermostat

I have the Nest Thermostat and I got a Nest Temperature Sensor.  Do the sensors not work with the Nest Thermostat  or do you need the Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat models?  When trying to add the sensor, the instructions tell me to use the Nest App but the Nest App won’t let me add my Nest Thermostat as a product.  I need to add the thermostat to be able to add the sensor, from my understanding.

The Nest Temperature Sensor only works with the Nest 3rd GEN Learning Thermostat or the Nest Thermostat E.
