Nest subase

I installed a Nest thermostat my customer supplied, it looked new, but as soon as I put my wire in the Y1 terminal it would start the AC system. I double checked the wiring, everything was fine. It's a simple 1 heat/1 cool system. I put the old stat back on and the system worked fine. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this with resolve, or if we just have a bad subbase.

If this is a Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd or 3rd generation, this might of happened when if the power was not turned off before installing the base and attaching the thermostat conductors.  The backplate has discrete electronics on it that can be damaged with a static charge.

If as you say the backplate connects the R to Y without the display attached, then the backplate must be replaced as it is damaged.  Have your customer contact Google and have it replaced for free since it is within the first 30-days of ownership.
