Nest thermostat does not work

Sirbillmcneal
Community Member

I’ve spent months on chat with support trying to get my thermostat to work. Still doesn’t. Every day my thermostat will decide what temperature my house is at. When I’m at home I feel and watch it change. When I’m gone it will drop it down as if I’m there. Google support refuses to help, or do anything about it. I keep getting the run around. There’s many people on this forum with the exact same

problem. This is a junk product.

Probably the chat people already went through this, but I think the first step toward trouble-shooting is to make sure that the smart features are turned off.  Turn off Home/Away Assist and/or Presence Sensing (depending on what interface you're using).  Make sure your utility company doesn't have you on a plan where they cut back on your electric use at times of peak demand.

If those other influences are suppressed, your Nest should follow the schedule you've set up.  Are you saying that it will not do so?

The Nest does have some settings that may modify the way the schedule works,   On home.nest.com, for example, my Nest shows "Time-to-Temp", "True Radiant", "Sunblock", and "Fan Schedule" as options that might make the Nest deviate from the exact set times and temperatures of the schedule.

Another step in trouble-shooting is to narrow down where the problem occurs, e.g., whether it's the way the Nest is programmed, the Nest's communication with your AC via the wiring, an actual defect in the Nest, or a problem within your AC system.  At the times when you see and feel the AC coming on or turning off inappropriately, is it obeying what the Nest claims to be calling for at that time?  If so, is the Nest calling for a temperature different from what is in your schedule?  If on the other hand the AC comes on or goes off at a time when the Nest's display says it does not intend to do that, then there may be a problem with the wiring.

(I'm sorry if this answer is useless; you may have been through all of this many times by now.)

It’s a useless answer. You want me to disable the features that were the very reason I bought it. Why have this in the first place if I disable everything that makes it cost so much money. What a waste of time this was.

Just to clarify, I intended to suggest disabling those features only as a temporary trouble-shooting step.  If there are fancy features active on top of the basic schedule operations, it would be much harder to tell whether the Nest and your system are working and communicating adequately, or whether something is defective.

Maybe first ask if other people have suggested it. Rather than posting giant paragraphs it would be faster to ask generally if that’s been done. And the answer is yes… many many times.

You haven’t answered anything yet. Have been no help. Every day I pay higher electric bills. You are terrible at your job.

Hi Sirbillmcneal,

I'm sorry if you feel that way. I'd love to know more about what's happening. Could you check the Nest Energy History so we could see the reason why your thermostat's temperature is changing? You could click on this link to learn more about this.

Thanks,

Edward

Ya. Thanks for saying literally the same thing every single agent has done with me. Go look at how many agents I’ve done this with. A dozen… maybe two dozen… stop with the games. I WILL NOT DO THIS ANYMORE.

Hey there,

@EdwardT, thanks for the help.
@Sirbillmcneal, checking back in — have you had the chance to fill out the form?

Best,
Mel

The form that says absolutely nothing. Yup. Sure did…….

This form is nothing. What are you talking about? Why is it on this that is the only way I can get any communication with your company? What even is this? I do not trust it.

You can look back to the last 6 agents whom I’ve all shared that information with. Not doing it again. Sharing that information did nothing then, me sharing it again won’t help you any more. Go look back to the other agents I shared that information with

Is this some kind of joke? Because it isn’t funny.

Yea thanks. I’ve been told to do this, oh I don’t know… maybe by 12 people by now. I tried it once or twice and that didn’t help… I’ve explained this so many times now it’s in your records by now
