Nest thermostat in vacation rental - Lock or unlock

ReluctantLandlo

We just installed a Nest Thermostat gen3 in our vacation condo that we started using for vacation renters this summer. I expected that use of this condo will be different from ours but I am very disappointed in the abuse we’ve encountered in the past few months.  (Broken electric fireplace insert, stolen wine glasses)
The very first couple who stayed for a w/e after the install set the a/c to 64 F for the entire weekend when the outside temps were in the mid to high 70’s.
I suggested to our management company that I wanted to lock in a reasonable range for a/c and heat and she immediately told me not to do it.  She described a situation last summer where she received “call after call” regarding an owner who locked their thermostat.  She didn’t provide the info I asked for regarding whether it was a set temp or a temp range and what the settings were that were not acceptable.

She, of course, is worried about bad reviews.  I am too, but not at the expense of our a/c unit and enormous electric bills.

So, owners, do you lock or not?  What are the thermostat settings?  Temp range or set temp?  If you lock,  are you swamped with calls and bad reviews?
Thanks very much.  Liz

Hi ReluctantLandlo,

Sorry about the issues you've had with renters. I imagine it's quite a lot to consider in a situation like that. I just wanted to check in and see if you found any info outside the forums and give this a little more visibility with my reply. It's possible that the majority of our community members are using the Nest Thermostats in their own homes, but I would imagine we do have some out there in a similar situation as you. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you in the meantime.

Thanks,

Jeff

I guess you should go ahead and lock it.  I’m surprised that no one responded.  It seemed like a pretty straightforward question and on that every owner who rents to strangers must grapple with.  But thanks for checking with me.  Liz
