The locking feature doesn't make a whole lot of sense. When you go to the lock feature in the app, and select lock to unlock. It just unlocks. Then, to lock it, you put in a pin. It can be anything, different from before. You don't need it to unlock, so why put it in in the first place?
Also, the temp seems to go up and down during the night, even tho no one is changing it. Has the thermostat been hacked? Is it a learning thing? I don't get it. It is only a couple if degrees either way.

What you’ve described is normal behaviour, it hasn’t been hacked. The lock feature is to prevent changes made using the thermostat itself (think children). It’s not designed to stop changes from the app, hence it doesn’t ask you for the PIN to unlock using the app. Otherwise, you would easily lock yourself out if you forgot the PIN.
As for the temperature changes, that could be due learning for the temperature schedule.

Then why have a pin at all? It's stupid.

Hey Grammapat1325,
It looks like davidking was able to explain things here. I wanted to jump in and see if you needed anything else or to see if you were all set with the info here. If there's more you need, just let me know.
Thanks,
Jeff

Because unless you have the PIN, you can’t make changes directly on the thermostat without that PIN. Children and guests won’t be able to control your thermostat, because they won’t have access to your Nest app.
