Our nest thermostat has been stuck on the software update screen for weeks and is offline as a result — we’ve removed from the base and manually recharged with cord. We’ve also tried to restart but we can’t access any of the system settings. How can we get past the continuous software update?
thanks!

OK try this, remove display from base.
Then hold display like a burger and squeeze like a burger until the screen goes of and keep squeezing- do NOT release until the house comes on. Do that twice. Then replace on the base, see what happens.

How did you do the restart?

Pressed down on the thermostat screen until it went blank, released it, and then pressed down again — it still comes back to the software update (home icon) screen though.

How long should it take for the house to show up again? I’ve been holding/squeezing display for 10+ minutes and nothing is happening. Thanks.

15 seconds, holding that length of time would suggest a software issue. Try doing that again until you see a light show at the top of the screen.

Same thing — hold down for several minutes and a light never shows up. If it’s connected to the base then it sometimes shows a green light and sometimes shows a red light (which I believe reflects charging status).

I assume you are now back to software updating?
Can you ever see the settings menu?
How old is the thermostat?

Yes, correct. The screen is either blank (if pressed down long enough), or on the software updating screen (if illuminated).
Cannot get past the software update screen to access any settings.
And, the thermostat is a few years old — maybe 4ish.

The only other thing I can think of is, remove the display from the base. Let the battery run flat, that will take a few days. Then insert usb lead in to see if that changes things.
