Do you have a Heat Pump? You have white wire is in the O/B position? Can you post the picture of the old thermostat base showing the wires and their connection?

Its not a heat pump system ...I don’t have a pic of the 1st tstats that were been by my HVAC person...and the wiring was done by an electrician…I have 5 nests installed to 5 individual systems and he can’t get the nest to work with them. I have an old steam heat system as well and the nest is working with that. These heat/ac units were working with the original TStats he installed but they were big and white and ugly…so I bought the Nests and he reinstalled new wire etc and can’t get it to work right...

Was [S]he a Nest Pro and thus properly trained how to install the and configure a Nest thermostat? I guessing not.
You need to do this, remove the white wire from O/B and insert it into W. Then install the display onto the base.  Next, wake up up display and enter SETUP.  Change view to EQUIPMENT. Then down to Pro Setup. You will get a warning just continue. You will see the back plate with green and possibly yellow wedges. There might be a yellow wedge on W.  If so, select it and then define what the heating system is form the list.  Set the fan to Do Not Turn On. Now exit and test the system.

Well, that doesn’t quite make sense. Here’s how you get there.

You wake up your thermostat, you go to SETTINGS and select it.

Once you’re in SETTINGS, you then go to the sub menu EQUIPMENT and select it.

Once selected you will see a display of your current detected system wires. Choose CONTINUE.

Next you will see a list of the currently defined SYSTEM. Choose CONTINUE.

Next you will have the choice to edit your system settings, here we choose PRO SETUP.

you will then see a warning and here we choose CONTINUE.

Next you will see the backplate only this time each system element will have a Green Wedge, a Yellow Wedge, or no Wedge.  Initially,  We are looking for any yellow wedge.  The wedges will only be on terminals that the nest detected a wire is connected to.

Choose the W for Heating, and you can then define or check the setup.  is it the correct type of heat? If not select it and correct it.  When finished select DONE, and then you will be sent back to the Your System submenu.

Here you can go down to TEST and then test your heating.  Wind systems are define with heat pumps. You have to be careful not to switch between testing heating and cooling without waiting five minutes. You must allow the compressor and the refrigerant gas to stabilize before you switch from heating and cooling.

I hope this helps you to find out how to do a better job of confirming and setting up and adjusting your system. If there’s anything I have provided that you found helpful, please add a KUDO and if my answer solve your problem, please check the Recommended  Answer. Thank You

As you suggested and I think it worked...I did swap the white wires on all 5 Nest and returned them to factory setting and started over...That seems to have fixed the problem in 4 out of 5 ...fingers crossed. The 5th one states the C wire is not getting power. I did remove all the wires and reconnected them, but it did not resolve it. (It did work before). Also one of the Nest, the screen is messed up, only showing half of the temp...with multi color lines going through it...but is working. The HVAC person thinks the one that is stating the C wire is not getting power that it needs a new base...I don't trust him as he has not been able to get Nest to work. Any thoughts or suggestions on those 2 issues? Thanks again!

If the Nest are brand new units, you have a warranty claim for the broken display.  As for the C wire not working, it can only be verified with a Volt Ohm multimeter.  Check for AC power between the R and the C wires.  If it shows 21 to 28 Volts of AC power, it is good. Now plug the wires back into the base making sure the reach the proper length in and when tugged will not pull out.  If the thermostat still does not see the Common then again you have a warranty claim on that one too.

Hi Ken...I really have to share this, esp since with your guidance you gave me the confidence to tackle this!, so my HVAC specialist told me there wasn't any power going to one of the Nest thermostats...and the Nest did respond no power, no C power etc when I tried...WELL that's because 2 of the wires coming from the unit/furnace was disconnected!!! The unit is mounted close to ceiling in a closet...talk abt obvious?! Well we connected it ourselves copying one of the other units wiring, one of them that was working ...and changed the white wire as you suggested...and...all 5 Nests are now working no thanks to him! But I do thank you!!!

Have a great weekend and thank you so much for your patience and expertise!
