Nest thermostats switching to Home when no one in property

I have three holiday cottages in the uk. Each has a nest thermostat that are set to use home away assist (without phone location). In the last few days ALL three thermostats have stopped working and they keep switching to Home even though there is no one in the properties. This can’t possibly be the thermostats not working, it must be a network of update issue because all the thermostats are in different properties. The only thing that links them is they are all 3rd gen and all on my account,

I have noticed other people reporting the same issue with their thermostats. Has  there been a botched update at Google that has messed up these 3rd gen equipment?
Ive had the usual customer service advice to reset etc but thus is £750 worth of kit that is no longer working. It’s not acceptable to make out it’s my issue.

Hi @Letoatreides,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Community Forum! I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing with Home/Away Assist on your Google Home app, where it's automatically switching from Away to Home. I appreciate you taking the time to post about this. I'm happy to help.

I've reviewed the information you provided, and I have a few more questions to ensure I can provide the correct troubleshooting steps.

  • What devices, other than your Nest Thermostat, are you using to determine your Home/Away status?
  • Is your phone's location services always on and set to high accuracy for the Google Home app?
  • Have you checked the location permissions for the Google Home app on your phone?
  • Have you tried restarting your phone, your router, and your Nest Thermostat?

Visit our Help Center to learn more about Change Home/Away Assist settings.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,

Eduardo

Hi Eduardo, thanks for getting back to me. The only other devices used to determine home/away status are my Nest smoke alarms, but we don't have a pet so nothing is moving when we're not home. And certainly not with that 5 min regularity.

And it's Yes to all the other questions: phone location services always on for Google home and high accuracy, I know it works because it usually comes back when I get home while it's on Away, and yes I've tried restarting everything, none of that makes a difference.

For whatever reason, when I tried to put Google Home into Away manually in the Google Home app, the Nest thermostat seems to signal activity at home after 5 mins.
