Originally kept insisting I need the C wire (which had been tucked under some electrical tape) so I connected the C. From there on out I had error 298, no power. Spent hours trouble shooting through the help sites but no help. I disconnected the C wire again, can't connect to internet but at least I have heat. Oddly, no mention of the C wire this time around.

Okay, after many, many hours devouring all the pages on troubleshooting the no power problem and many, many midnight trips to the dungeon with a flashlight to turn the furnace on/off, After cutting back and stripping all the wires at thermostat AND furnace, I finally (as a Hail Mary) deleted the Google Home app and reinstalled it. That worked. Wasn't on ANY of Googles help pages but was able to connect on first try. They told me it must be my furnace, apparently they don't want to admit it might be something on their end. This journey and the responses I've gotten across platforms has showed me that there are many times it's them. Anyway, good to go, thanks for the help.

Update, I got cocky and tried to connect it again and it worked! I am connected to the internet and google home but I once again have no power to the thermostat. I'm really starting to hate this thing.

Finicky is the best I can describe mine. Three times it ran the furnace for extended periods when there was no call for heat. Chased it down to a flakey base and used the W2 terminal instead of W1. Also moved power from Rh to Rc

Need more info about the type of system you have.
Is it heating only or a A/C system also?
Do you have any pics of the Nest wires and also the heating system wires connected at the heater?
Are you sure the C wire is actually connected to "common" terminal at the heater wiring end?
