I installed a new router. In order to get the nest to switch to that I had to do a hard reset which deleted all of my programming (I don't know why we can't change the router information in the app to make it simpler). I reprogrammed the thermostat and it should act the way it did. The problem is that it keeps preheating to the next temperature setting while nobody is home. I've always had the preheating feature set to work but it never would start before I came home before resetting it. I want it to preheat only when I'm home and not while I'm away. The thermostat does say I'm away but it's heating anyway. I don't have return times set because I come and go at random. What has changed and how to I get it to go back to the way I had it before?

It sounds like your Nest thermostat may be set to "learning" mode, which may be causing it to preheat to the next temperature setting while nobody is home. In learning mode, the thermostat learns your habits and automatically adjusts the temperature based on when you typically come and go.
To turn off learning mode and regain control over your thermostat's programming, you can follow these steps:
Once you have turned off learning mode and Home/Away Assist, you can manually program your thermostat to preheat only when you are home. To do this, you can set a schedule for your preferred temperatures during different times of the day. You can also use the app to adjust the temperature remotely based on your current location or a specific schedule.
If you continue to experience issues with your Nest thermostat, you can contact Nest support for further assistance.

This is a first gen Nest. It doesn't have learning mode available. I just noticed tonight that it wasn't switching the temperature to eco when it's set to away either.

I see, thank you for letting me know that you have a first-generation Nest thermostat. In this case, it may be helpful to try resetting your thermostat to its default settings and then reprogramming it to your preferences.

This is what I did in the first place and caused the problems I have now.

I’ve been away from home for 2 days. The thermostat says away but yet it’s still heating my house to the presets and not keeping it in eco mode. Why won’t this work correctly anyway? Prior to resetting it to install a new router, it stayed in eco mode while I was away.

There could be a few reasons why your Google Nest thermostat is not maintaining eco mode while you're away. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
Check if your thermostat is set to "Home" mode
Sometimes, the thermostat can switch to "Home" mode accidentally, even if you're not physically present. You can check the mode by pressing the display and choosing "Home" or "Eco" mode as required.
Check the schedule settings
The schedule settings on your thermostat can override the eco mode. Check if the schedule settings are set correctly and adjust them as necessary.
Check the Home/Away Assist feature
The Home/Away Assist feature on your thermostat uses sensors to detect when you're home or away and adjusts the temperature accordingly. Check if this feature is enabled and working correctly.
I hope these suggestions help you to resolve the issue with your Google Nest thermostat. Good luck!

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.
Thanks for all the shared steps, @AriefAnshori. Big help!
@gregw0001, the schedule temperature could cause your system to activate automatically even when you're away. Please clear all your scheduled temperatures to avoid unexpected heating. Also, if you're signed in to any other mobile devices or someone who is invited in the Google Home app for the thermostat access, have them enable the same Home and Away settings and Eco settings.

I ended up deleting and reinstalling the thermostat because I could not get it to stay in eco mode when I was away. I was on vacation when I discovered this problem. I haven't been away from home long enough to see if it will hold the eco mode temperature during regularly scheduled temperature changes like it did prior to installing the new router.
