Only R and C wires on Honeywell thermostat

Young
Community Member

I only have R and C wires attached to my old Honeywell thermostat. There are white, blue, and yellow wires, but they are not attached to anything. I have 2 zones, each with separate HVAC units and thermostats. The one on the main level is working fine with Nest. This 2 wire one is in the bedroom upstairs. Thanks in advance

What type of heating system do you have?

Gas

I'm assuming you're taking a gas furnace. What were need to do is locate your furnace and open on panel where the thermostat where's connect. We need to see what wires are landed on the control board.

Yes, it is a gas furnace. I will take a picture of the control panel and post it in a day or so.

Thanks

OOPS.  I had uploaded the wrong unit's control panel pics.  Here are the correct ones. The HVAC is American Standard Model 4A7A4024L1000BA.

So hook them up to your nest according to color. W(hite), R(ed), Y(ellow), G(reen), and put the blue on the C terminal.

It turns out there is a Honeywell panel attached to the HVAC unit.  The current thermostat is of Honeywell.  The white, yellow, green wires that were not connected are really not connected on this panel.  Thanks.

No resolution at this point.  I think I need to hire a Nest Pro

Did you get to work? Did you rewire anything?

None of the smart thermostat companies have a guide on this and it would be really helpful too. I returned my smart thermostats bc I couldn't figure this out. I'm sure it would be easy with a guide and explanation. These systems are being installed in new houses like mine so I'm not sure why there isn't a guide already

Do you guys still need help?  I’m an HVAC Tech and know how to solve this.

Yes, please share. Trying to swap out a Honeywell as well.

Absolutely I was attempting to re wire it someone stated if I take a photo at the furnace then go to the thermostat connect the colors corresponding at the furnace everything would work properly we're going to find out if you have any advice truly appreciate it's been a couple months actually been a year and a half and figure this out.

I’m having the same issue. Can’t tell if it’s even compatible.

So go to your furnaces control board.  Depending on the stage unit you have youre gonna have 5, 6, or 7 wires:

R,C,G,W,W2,Y,Y2.
Take a picture of the colors going to each terminal, and put the same color wires to the same terminals

so say the Green wire is going to G terminal, put green to G on thermostat

if brown is going to G terminal on the furnace, put brown to G terminal at thermostat.

each unit may have different variables, such as, zoning systems, different upgrades to the system, etc.  if there are different terminals the wires are going to besides the ones I mentioned, let me know.

I have the same thing as the guy above. There’s a control panel that is using 2 wires that go to my thermostat but then that control panel goes to a secondary one with all the colors on it. I think he shows it in the picture. My thermostat does have all the wires behind it as well. I think we have the exact same system. My wording may be confusing though. I’m trying to figure out how to send pictures.

Just like Young’s last pic of the Honeywell panel, none of the wires other than red and blue are connected (they’re wrapped around the main chord and don’t plug into the panel itself) I think we all have the same setup and are wondering how to connect those wires to the panel correctly to be able to have a functional smart thermostat.
So—Red and blue are connected to C and R, on the thermostat end, and those same wires go directly into the Honeywell control board C and R.  All the other wires (yellow green and white) are disconnected on both ends.
Any idea on how to go around this? My home is relatively new as well so I’m sure there’s a solution to this.

ABA1EEDF-9C5C-4846-AC1F-A14E4A0559A9.jpegI circled in red where on the board C and R are attached in young’s photo. I have the exact same setup and I’m sure everyone else in this discussion do as well.

Hey there,

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to follow up and see if I could be of any help. Since we have limited information on our end about HVAC systems, I would recommend having a pro come out and take a closer look. They would be able to rewire your system and ensure the device is set up properly. Please let me know if you have any questions from here, as I would be happy to review.

Best regards,
Jake

I have this same scenario and cannot figure this out. There is nothing out there that helps guide me on how to wire or correct the issue.
