Pairing temperature sensor (Gen1) to Nest learning Thermostat

I wonder if someone can help me. I’m having problems associating a 1st Gen temperature sensor to a Nest Learning Thermostst 3rd Gen. In the Nest App I’ve been able to add the sensor but I can’t work out where/how I can associate it to the Thermo.

Hi, @TimM1!

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community. I’m truly sorry the Nest Sensor temperature is not connecting to the thermostat. I’m happy to help you and find a solution.

I appreciate you letting me know the Nest Sensor temperature is already added to the application.

To better assist you, please answer the following questions:

  • Are you receiving any error messages or codes?
  • Are both devices under the same account and home structure?

In the meantime, please follow these troubleshooting steps:

  • Restart the thermostat at the same time you restart the Nest Sensor:
    • Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen: Press the thermostat ring until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then let go of the ring.
    • Nest sensor: Remove the sensor battery for at least 30 seconds, then put it back.
  • Troubleshoot wireless interference.
  • Try to connect the Nest Temperature sensor with the Nest thermostat.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Hi Ana - thanks for the help.

I followed you advice to reset the Thermostat and also re-install the Sensor, but no luck.

I'm getting the following error messages:

In the Google Home App - 'No Nest thermostat detected'

In the Nest App - 'Waiting for thermostat update'

However, in both Apps the sensor is recognised. In the Google Home app it shows as a sensor which is offline and in the Nest App it's  showing as a sensor which is not associated with any thermostat.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Best regards - Tim

Hi, @TimM1!

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I appreciate you taking the time to follow all the troubleshooting steps in my previous post. I'm truly sorry that the Nest Temperature sensor is not connecting to the Nest Thermostat. I'm happy to assist you further!

Since you have a Nest Learning Thermostat, the entire process must be done through the Nest app. Once you finish setup, this action will be reflected in the Google Home app.

Since restarting both devices didn't work, let's try the following troubleshooting steps:

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Hi, @RayVSmith!

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I'm truly sorry that your Nest temperature sensor is not connecting to your Nest thermostat. I'm happy to assist you further.

To provide you with the best assistance, please let me know:

  • Is the Nest sensor successfully added to the Nest app and visible on the Google Home app?
  • Is the Nest Learning thermostat successfully connected to the Google Home app?

If both devices are connected to the app successfully, please try the following steps:

  • Make sure your phone's Bluetooth is on.
  • Move your sensor to a different location and try to connect it again. Your sensor should be within 50 feet (15 meters) of your thermostat, but it may need to be closer.
  • The connection range can be reduced by wireless interference from walls, cabinets, and bookshelves. If you still can't connect your sensor after a few tries, check for other things that are causing wireless interference. Cordless phones, microwaves, and other electronics can affect the Bluetooth connection.

If the issue persists, you might need to perform a factory reset on the Nest Temperature sensor. Remove the batteries for at least 5 minutes and then reinsert them. Also, perform a factory reset on your Nest Learning thermostat (4th gen). Set up both devices again and try to reconnect them.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Both sensors we showing in the GH app. but not connecting. I factory reset both nest thermostats, a 3 and a 4, replaced both sensor batteries and everything jumped up. I’m all good now. Thank you so much for your speedy response and reply.

Hi Ana

I performed the suggested steps, however when trying to add the Sensor to the Nest App I'm still getting the following message 'Waiting for thermostat update. Before you can add a Nest Temperature Sensor, your thermostat needs a software update. If it's connected to Wi-fi, it should get the update soon.' Even when trying the sensor without the option of scanning the QR code, I'm still getting the same message. Any more ideas ?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, @TimM1!

Thank you for your response and update. I'm sorry to hear that the troubleshooting steps didn't resolve the issue with your Nest Temperature Sensor and Nest Thermostat. I'd be happy to assist you further.

To connect the Nest Sensor with the thermostat, let's check for any updates on the Nest Thermostat:

  • From the Quick View menu on your thermostat, select Settings.
  • Choose > Software > Update.

If the thermostat is already running the latest software version, remove the Nest Thermostat from the Nest app. Then, try to connect the Nest Sensor before adding the Nest Thermostat back to the app. Reset the Account Connection on the Nest Thermostat and add it back to the Nest app. After that, attempt to connect both devices.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Hi again.

The Thermo had the latest software. When I remove the thermo from the Nest app and then try to add the sensor, I get an error message that the sensor must be paired with a Gen 3 or 4 Learning Thermo. And then I’m not able to add it.
