Questions on Upgrading from Nest 2nd gen to 4th gen

My Nest 2nd generation has failed (according to my HVAC tech) so I have to replace it.

My questions:

  • The Nest 2nd gen is installed with a Nest trim kit behind it. (Nest thermostats used to come with these trim kits). Will I be able to use this trim kit with the new 4th gen Nest Learning Thermostat?
  • Will the upgrade be as easy as popping off the old 2nd gen unit and plugging in the new 4th gen unit?

(My biggest concern, though, is with the trim kit. I'd hate to have to repaint the wall just to upgrade the thermostat).

Looking at the Technical Info the the old thermostat, it shows Model:  Display-2.8. It also shows Backplate model: Backplate-2.6.  (This is how I'm assuming it's a 2nd generation unit...could be wrong on this?)

Hello @OzzieMike

Thanks for reaching out to our Nest Community. Welcome I'm happy to help you with your new Nest Thermostat installation.

For this particular model of our Nest Learning Thermostat we do not have a trim kit available in our google store and It is also not compatible with previous kits regrettably.

For the installation you can continue with the same previous wiring configuration to avoid any problems.

Feel free to keep us posting if you have more questions, I'm happy to help you.

Kind regards,

Douglas.
